  • Bio

    Dr. Athanasius N. Samaras is Assistant Professor in International and Political Communication at the International and European Relations Department of the University of Piraeus. He teaches Media and Communication, International Political Communication, Learning Theories and Instructional Methodologies, Rhetorical Communication and Persuasion, and Cultural Diplomacy.

    He holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of Piraeus, an M.A. in Communication Policy from City University (London, UK) an M.A. in Political Communicationand Rhetorics from Emerson College (Boston, USA) and a Ph.D. in Political Communication from Sussex University (Brighton, UK). He is the author of two books on political advertising (2003 and 2009) and editor of a book on the images of nations (2014). He has authored 18 essays published in peered-review journals and edited volumes and 57 presentations at international conferences. He has published in Greek, English and French while his work has been translated in Russian and Turkish.

    He has conducted research for the Hellenic Audiovisual Institute, the Mediterranean Foundation, the Institute of Defense Analysis and the University Research Institute of Applied Communication. He has conducted political campaigns in Greece and Cyprus and been employed as a consultant in major corporations and institutions (Hellenic Parliament, Management Authority for Operational Program ‘Competitiveness’, OTEnet). He has taught at the Cyprus University of Technology (2007-08), the Hellenic Navy War School (2001-04) and the Hellenic National Defense College (2004-10).

    His research interest is on international and political communication, strategic communication and campaigning, images of nations and nation-branding, ethnocentrism and Europeanization in political discourse and news media, rhetorical communication and persuasion, news media and crisis management, political advertising, talk shows and interviews.
